Sertoma exists for the high and noble purpose of SERvice TO MAnkind by communication of thoughts, ideas and concepts to accelerate human progress in health, education, freedom and democracy. Sertomans are a unique, fun-loving group dedicated to service. Sertoma stands apart with its “community feel” and club autonomy. Sertoma means different things to different people, with the common thread of camaraderie and a sense of contributing to something much larger than oneself. Although Sertoma's primary service project is assisting the more than 50 million people with communicative disorders, the individual clubs identify specific needs in their communities. Projects funded include summer camps for hard of hearing youth, Fantasy Sports Camps, computer software or equipment to serve people’s needs, speech or hearing related equipment, speech/hearing screening programs, projects that meet needs of children or the elderly, school equipment, wheelchairs, hearing aids, communication devices, fire equipment, drug prevention programs, playground or athletic field development, historical preservation and beautification projects, guide dogs for the blind and more. Youth are the future of society – and of Sertoma. Serteens are young men and women, ages 11 to 19, who are interested in what’s going on in the world and who are motivated to improve their world through SERrvice TO MAnkind. The Serteens program is a great avenue for teens to identify and contribute to community needs, as well as to fulfill the community service requirement established by many schools. Collegiate clubs are also sponsored for college/university students desiring to serve their communities.
